Winterizing Your Home

Everyone knows that Rochester is familiar with winter, with an average snowfall of 77 inches a year. Love the snow or hate it, living in Rochester means you’re going to have to get used to it. Anyone who has just moved to Rochester will notice everyone getting all bundled up in preparation for the long winter. If you’re not new, you know what we’re talking about. However, while a lot of people go out and buy new jackets and boots, not as many think about doing the same for their home.

Winterizing your home can help you keep your home in tip top shape and save you money as well! We wanted to make things as easy as can be for our homebuyers, so we created this quick checklist to use in the process of winterizing your home.

1. Fireplaces

Soot, debris, and sometimes animal nest can be hazardous, if not cleaned properly. Before setting your first fire for the season, make sure to schedule an annual inspection & have a chimney sweep come & help you clean it up.

2. Clean Your Gutters

Make sure your gutters are free of fall leaves and debris. This helps to prevent ice dams and icicles.

3. Program Your Thermostat

If you’re working in the office, make sure to program your thermostat to keep the temperature lower when you are not at home. This can help save you money on your energy bill!

4. Replace Your Filters

Replacing the filters in your air and heating systems helps to increase the long-term life and saves money!

5. Don’t Forget About The Outdoors

Make sure you put away & store any outdoor furniture to protect it from the cold & snow. Also, don’t forget to bring any plants in before it gets too cold. If you don’t have space to store these items, just buy some covers to keep them protected.

6. Windows

Check your windows for any places where warm air can escape. If you find any spots just apply some weather-stripping or caulk to patch it up.

7. Check Your Roof

Make sure your roof is ready for the winter by checking for any broken or frayed shingles, clearing any debris, cutting back overhanging branches, and invest in a good snow roof rake, yes those are a thing.

By winterizing your home, your wallet and your home will thank you. If you have any questions about any of these tips, or a different tip, feel free to reach out to us.
